Breech baby: what are the causes?

Before getting into the main maneuvers to turn a breech baby, let's see what the causes behind this presentation may be.

I'll start by recalling a fact, that is, that, on average, approximately 4% of pregnancies reach term with the fetus in breech presentation (i.e. with the feet facing downwards).

For the sake of accuracy, I remind you that breech presentation can be of different types . We can talk about:

  • Complete breech baby : both the legs and the knees are flexed;

  • incomplete breech baby : both hips - even just one may be sufficient - are in a partially or fully extended position;

  • frank breech baby or buttock variety: in this case, the puppy's hips are flexed and the knees are extended.

As of today, science has not yet identified a univocal and certain answer to the question " Why is the fetus breech? "

However, several correlations have been observed between this occurrence - which during childbirth can increase the risk of compression of the umbilical cord by the head - and some peculiarities of pregnancy.

In several cases, for example, we speak of breech presentation favored by anomalies of placental adhesion or insertion , for example the pictures of placenta previa , anterior or accreta.

It is important to underline that, in the case of polyhydramnios , an event characterised by an excessive quantity of fluid in the amniotic sac, the incidence of breech presentations increases (among the various testimonies, this scientific article updated at the beginning of the year also serves to remind us of this).

Please note: you may also have to deal with a breech baby due to physiological factors, such as a particularly narrow mother's pelvis.

In these situations, the baby actually has little space to rotate.

Before getting into the details of how to help your little one turn over, I would like to remind you that if you are wondering how to sleep if your fetus is breech , the guidelines to follow always focus on the left side position .
