Severe abdominal pain during pregnancy: possible causes

Abdominal pain during pregnancy can be caused by various factors , not necessarily worthy of medical attention.

These include so-called Braxton Hicks contractions.

Sporadic and non-rhythmic episodes of uterine contractile activity - which are therefore a very different signal from the contractions that mark the beginning of labor - appear already during the fifth - sixth month of pregnancy and have the task of promoting the sensory perception of the puppy and preparing the uterine muscles for the great work of labor.

They can occur after physical activity, following sexual intercourse , or when the bladder is full.

They differ from the contractions of early labor because the pain level is significantly lower and they gradually decrease until they disappear completely.

Among other causes of abdominal pain during pregnancy that should not cause excessive concern, it is possible to mention constipation, the onset of which is favored by changes in hormonal balance typical of pregnancy, meteorism , caused by increased progesterone levels, and changes affecting the round ligament.

The latter, which literally embraces the uterus, undergoes a physiological lengthening as the puppy grows.

The pain that affects him can be dull or cramp-like and is localized in the lower abdomen.

It may occur following a change in position or when sitting.
