5 month old baby: his psychomotor development

Your baby is growing really fast. In fact, during this period his weight doubles compared to birth, social interaction improves and his movements become more and more complex.

In this article I will show you the main stages of psychomotor development of a 5-month-old baby.

Furthermore, I will report the red flags , that is, the red flags that can make you think of a delay in your child's psychomotor development.

What is psychomotor development?

Psychomotor development represents the child's global growth process. This means that it will include different areas:

  • Motor and postural development;
  • Socio-emotional development;
  • The development of language and communication;
  • Cognitive development.

Every child is different and has his own pace, but it is possible to identify some skills that are achieved by the newborn depending on his age.

In this article we will see in detail those that are acquired in the first month of life.

Possible problems in the 5 month old baby

Before seeing the abilities that the little one will achieve in this first stage, let's talk about the problems that can arise in this phase of development.

Gas colic and gastroesophageal reflux

Colic and reflux are very common problems in newborns from the first days of life. In fact, it seems that almost 1 in 2 children suffer from them.

Unfortunately, even though the baby has difficulty digesting, cries desperately, makes gas and has difficulty emptying his stool, most of the time parents are told that colic is normal and physiological, and that it will pass on its own with time.

The truth is quite different: it is NOT normal for your baby to cry, suffer and feel bad because he has a stomach ache, has difficulty breathing and a swollen abdomen.

Furthermore, colic and reflux can lead the little one to refuse to do Tummy Time because he is too disturbed, with the consequence of slowing down his motor development.

Colic and reflux in newborns can be PREVENTED and TREATED EFFECTIVELY.

To truly cure infant colic and reflux, you must first reduce inflammation of the gastrointestinal system by eliminating the factors that irritate and inflame it.

Subsequently, osteopathic massages are performed on the child's abdomen to relax the gastrointestinal smooth muscles, with the aim of restoring correct motility and intestinal transit.

Two of the main parameters to intervene on to prevent and treat gas colic in newborns are the mother's diet and the type of artificial milk (if the newborn is bottle-fed), but not only that.

You need to know all 7 factors that irritate the gastrointestinal system and which I have summarised in the video course ''Prevention and Treatment of Colic and Reflux in Newborns'' .
