Neonatal Reflux: The Real Causes and Remedies to Solve It

Neonatal gastroesophageal reflux is an extremely common problem in infants (both breastfed and formula-fed).

Unfortunately, even though the child has difficulty digesting , regurgitates and cries , most of the time parents are told that the reflux is physiological and will pass with time .

The truth is quite different: it is NOT normal for your baby to cry and feel bad because he has a stomach ache, digestive problems or gastrointestinal problems.

Gastroesophageal reflux in newborns, like gas colic , is caused by an irritant and inflammatory condition of the stomach (and the gastrointestinal system) which can be PREVENTED (from pregnancy or the first days of life) and/or CURED .

Neonatal reflux: introduction

The term neonatal gastroesophageal reflux indicates the reflux of food from the stomach into the esophagus.

Since the newborn's nourishment is milk, the term gastroesophageal reflux indicates the rising of milk from the stomach towards the esophagus with or without regurgitation/vomiting .

The child who suffers from reflux has an irritative and inflammatory picture at the gastrointestinal level: this is why he manifests digestive difficulties both during and after feeding, discomfort and pain , cries often, burps even after feeding, often regurgitates and/or vomits projectiles, etc.

How to understand if the newborn suffers from gastroesophageal reflux?

irritability caused by neonatal reflux

Let's see what the symptoms and signs to pay attention to could be to identify reflux in newborns.

Regurgitation and Vomiting

The unmistakable sign to understand if the newborn suffers from reflux are episodes of vomiting or regurgitation, because they clearly demonstrate the milk rising up to the mouth.

The term regurgitation indicates that the child's vomiting occurs in moderate quantities, although it may occur several times during the day.

The term newborn vomiting indicates that the amount of milk regurgitated by the baby is large.

In both cases, the pediatrician must make sure that the newborn is growing and is not caused by serious underlying pathologies (e.g. pyloric stenosis).

newborn spit up

Episodes of regurgitation and vomiting in newborns can occur either immediately after feeding or later .

In cases where the baby spits up immediately after feeding, the milk is still liquid ; if the baby spits up some time after feeding, the milk may already be curdled and initially digested (in this case the smell of the vomit is more acidic ).

In both cases, these episodes clearly manifest the gastric irritation and the consequent digestive difficulty of the child.
