What is episiotomy?
An episiotomy is a surgical incision that can be made in the tissues of the perineum and posterior vaginal wall during the final stage of childbirth.
The aim is to widen the vaginal opening to facilitate the passage of the fetus.
As recalled in this video by Dr. Maria Chiara Alvisi, an independent midwife since 2013, over the last three decades there has been a dramatic increase in cases where episiotomy has been performed in the absence of specific indications.
