Hemorrhoids in pregnancy: what are they?
When we talk about hemorrhoids in general, we are referring to conditions that, from a clinical point of view, present themselves as pathological protrusions of the hemorrhoidal plexus.
A network of veins located at the level of the anal canal, the hemorrhoidal plexus is made up of "cushions" with a strong blood supply, i.e. hemorrhoids.
Their purpose is to regulate voluntary fecal retention.
As highlighted in this video by Dr. Alvisi, hemorrhoids during pregnancy can have different degrees of severity.
Here are the details on this:
Grade I: The hemorrhoids come out following strain, but retract spontaneously and are not prolapsed;
grade II : the hemorrhoids prolapse under strain, but retract at the end of the strain;
grade III: the prolapse is persistent and requires a manual maneuver;
Grade IV: The prolapse is permanent and cannot be reduced manually.
