How to hold a newborn from 0 to 4 months?
In the first few months, it may seem difficult to understand how to hold a newborn in your arms correctly. However, the correct posture will ensure that the baby has better digestion and adequate support for the head and neck.
In this article I will explain step by step all the steps to lift your little one and keep him in the correct position.
Also, you can watch the video below to see the theory put into practice and understand how to do it by observing my movements.
1. How to take it correctly from the supine position
In the first months of life, the muscle tone of the baby's neck is very low. For this reason, it is always said to pay close attention to the baby's head.
To ensure that you support the neck and head as best as possible, it is important to place a hand right at the base of the head before lifting the baby from the supine position.
From here, gradually lift the baby and place your second hand first behind his back and then under his bottom.
2. How to hold a newborn baby in your arms by supporting the pelvis and back
By placing your second hand between the lower back and the bottom, you will be able to hold the little one on a board without hunching him over too much.
In fact, this way you will distribute the support evenly across the baby's entire body.

3. What is the correct posture?
The most correct posture is the vertical one because it allows you to support the baby's head in the best possible way without creating postural asymmetries and facilitating digestion .
The important thing is to make sure that you do not support the baby only with your lower hand to avoid him being completely hunched over. The newborn must be able to remain well aligned and upright.
Holding the newborn with the sling
If the baby often wants to be held in the parents' arms and in contact with them, as time goes by it can become increasingly tiring due to its weight and the impossibility of carrying out any activity.
Using baby slings or baby carriers can be a solution as they allow the baby to remain in contact, but at the same time maintain a correct position for his spine and development.
You can discover all the advantages of babywearing in my dedicated article.

4. How to hold a newborn after feeding
The position in which you hold your baby after breastfeeding is also important. In fact, it is often said to place the baby sitting on your lap and pat him gently on the back to help him burp.
First of all I have to tell you that burping is not necessary if the baby eats slowly and in the correct position.
Burping is a sign of a possible presence of gastrointestinal disorders that cause the baby to have difficulty digesting.
Returning to the position, the sitting position is wrong as it leads to a squashing of the stomach, making digestion even slower and risks causing a stiff neck in the baby.
The upright position , on the other hand, helps him digest better. It is important to say, however, that the position does not resolve colic and reflux as they derive from gastrointestinal inflammation.
To find out how to treat them effectively, I recorded a video course that will explain all the parameters to evaluate and improve to make your child feel better.

5. Massage while holding him in your arms
Did you know that while you hold your baby you can give him a massage to help his posture and spinal development?
In my video course Osteo-massage I explain how to perform delicate and effective massages to relax your baby and bring him a series of benefits .
For example, back massage allows you to:
- Relax your muscles;
- Improve the mobility of the spine, promoting correct development of the physiological curves of the back and excellent posture;
- Relax the baby and improve the sleep rhythm;
- Improve digestion and breathing;
- Promote parent-child bonding and relationships.
In addition to the Osteo-massage on the back, you can also find one on the stomach, lower limbs and mouth.
