Growth Spurts: What You Need to Know and How to Manage Them
What are growth spurts?

Physical growth spurts
Cognitive growth spurts
Cognitive growth spurts , on the other hand, correspond to the peak moments of a child’s psychological, logical and cognitive development. Two Dutch researchers, Frans Plooij and Hetty van de Rijt, call these spurts the “ Worder Weeks ,” or prodigious weeks.
The duration of the spurts can vary from child to child and have different durations because they are linked to the development of his nervous system. Usually the first cognitive growth spurts are quite short , when the changes are more complex they can last even a few weeks . This is why periods such as the insertion into the nursery, characterized by great novelties, can trigger episodes of crying and restless sleep typical of these spurts.
What are the growth spurt months?
If we look on the internet we can also find tables that indicate the periods of growth spurts , but we must always keep in mind that every child and every mother-child pair is different.
Typically, however, physical growth spurts occur during these periods:
- between the 1st and 3rd week
- between the 6th and 8th week
- at 3 months
- at 6 months
- at 9 months
- at 12 months
Instead, the cognitive ones in these:
- 5 weeks
- Between the 7th and 9th week
- Between the 11th and 12th week
- 14 – 19 weeks (approximately 4 months)
- 22 – 26 weeks (approximately 5 – 6 months)
