Water breaking is a very sensitive topic for all pregnant women.

There are many questions regarding this topic.

What does it mean when the expression “ rupture of membranes ” is used? What are the signs that allow you to understand that it has occurred? How can a woman at the end of pregnancy understand if she has ruptured the amniotic sac even if she is not having contractions?: these are some of the questions that characterize the daily thoughts of all expectant mothers.

Now, as I like to say, let's get into the heart of the action and discover, guided by the advice of an expert midwife, everything a mother-to-be should know about her water breaking.

What is water breaking?

As highlighted in this video by Doctor Maria Chiara Alvisi, an independent midwife since 2013 and author and protagonist of the extraordinary online prenatal video course that you can find at the end of the paragraph, the expression “ water breaking ” is inappropriate.

In fact, it is the membranes that can rupture when the pregnancy reaches its natural conclusion .

During its stay in the womb, the baby is enclosed between two membranes, scientifically known as the amnion and the chorion.

Their role is fundamental. In fact, they serve to maintain the amniotic fluid. In this way, the puppy has the possibility of growing in an isolated and protected environment, safe from possible infections.

As mentioned above, at the end of pregnancy you may have to deal with rupture of membranes.

How can you tell if it happened? There are two situations to consider. Here are which ones:

  • The first, which has entered the collective imagination also thanks to numerous movie scenes, is the classic waterfall. Most future mothers fear that it could appear in unexpected situations and in public, for example while they are in line at the supermarket checkout.

  • The second, which occurs more frequently, is the situation in which the pregnant woman has to deal with a breaking of high waters. The amniotic fluid that the future mother notices drips between the aforementioned membranes and the wall of the uterus. It then slides towards the cervix, finally arriving at the vaginal orifice.

In the second of the two cases described, the flow is not consistent . The mother-to-be simply feels a higher level of humidity than usual.
