What is cervical mucus?

Before talking in detail about cervical mucus during pregnancy, let's see what we are talking about when, in general, it is mentioned.

Cervical mucus is a secretion of viscous consistency, the density of which is subject to strong variations.

It is secreted by endocervical cells , which are found in the area of the cervix closest to the main body of the uterus.

Here's what it's made of:

  • Water : in this case, we are talking about the component that basically constitutes about 90% of cervical mucus. In the ovulatory phase, it can reach up to 98%;
  • glucose : its concentration increases during female orgasm and, according to some scientific theories, it could represent a factor capable of promoting fertilization;
  • soluble proteins (with the relative amino acids that compose them);
  • electrolytes (among others, I would like to mention calcium, potassium, sodium and zinc): their levels increase in the days surrounding ovulation, both before and after;
  • antibodies which, in the event of immunological incompatibility, have the task of blocking the spermatozoa.
