Heuristic Game: How to Prepare It and What Are the Benefits for the Child?
Play is an essential element in your child's life because it represents a fundamental means for them to learn and grow in a fun way. However, there is one type of play that goes beyond simple entertainment and is known to have a significant impact on children's development: heuristic play . This innovative educational practice used in many Montessori-based nurseries offers children a unique opportunity to explore the world around them independently, while developing a wide range of cognitive, sensory and creative skills .
But kindergarten is not the only place where it can be proposed. In this article you will discover how to organize heuristic play for your child at home and observe the way he interacts with his surroundings.
What is meant by heuristic play?
Who invented it?
Heuristic play was theorized by educational psychologist Elinor Goldschmied , who also created the famous Treasure Basket . According to the author, heuristic play represents the natural evolution of the basket because it responds to the new needs of discovery and development of older children, that is, from 12 months onwards.
If in the treasure basket the child asks himself “What is this?”, in the heuristic game the child is asked to do a greater analysis to understand “What can I do with this?” by relating the different materials.
How to prepare a heuristic game
To prepare the heuristic game, you must first collect commonly used objects and materials . For each type, it is recommended to have at least 10 types of the same material , but in different shapes and colors, and to place them inside cloth bags with the type of content drawn on the outside. In fact, this will allow the child to immediately understand what is contained inside it. When you manage to create 15 to 20 bags, you can propose the heuristic game to the child.
It is equally important to choose a suitable place free from distractions and other toys . For example, by placing the play mat in the middle of a room. At this point, you can arrange the bags all over the play area and let the child explore independently.
How long does a game session last?
Examples of materials needed
All the objects used must be clean and in good condition, but let's look in detail at some examples of what can be included in the various bags:
- Common household items : teaspoons, caps, clothes pegs, curlers, rubber bands
- Cotton objects : ribbons, pieces of cloth, socks;
- Natural objects : sponges, shells, corks, feathers, pine cones, leaves.

Example of a heuristic game: Treasure Islands
“ Treasure islands” can be proposed as a heuristic game to the child starting from when he walks confidently, around 18 months . The preparation consists of preparing three “islands”, each formed by a selection of objects distributed on the floor around a tin can that represents the treasure chest of the island.
The child will move between the islands discovering the various objects in each one.
The role of the adult in heuristic play
As with all Montessori games, such as the treasure basket and Montessori panels , your role will only be that of an observer .
It is important that you do not intervene by helping the child or by speaking because you could block the creative flow and concentration of the child. There is no right or wrong way to play, interact and observe; therefore, the child must be left free.
The important thing is to make sure that the objects are not used in a risky way by the child.
