We will do this using as a beacon the precious advice of Doctor Maria Chiara Alvisi, independent midwife and author of some of the Academy's video courses, among which the one dedicated to breastfeeding stands out, accessible at the end of the paragraph.
What is a pacifier?
Before going into the details of how to use the pacifier , let's take a moment to take stock of its technical peculiarities.
Also known by the technical name of pacifier , it is a teat , made of materials that can range from rubber to plastic, up to silicone , which is offered to the newborn to calm him and stimulate sleep.
The English word pacifier , which translates to the Italian term “ciuccio” , makes its purpose clear.
The pacifier , which stimulates the natural sucking process , is designed in such a way as to prevent the puppy from swallowing it.
The teat , also called teat, in addition to being available in different materials, is characterized by various alternatives regarding shapes. It can be:
Roundabout;
anatomical;
drop by drop.
In the first case mentioned, when you look at the pacifier , you can notice a shape that, at first glance, resembles that of a ball.
However, when dealing with a pacifier with an anatomical teat , the first peculiarity that catches the eye is the asymmetry.
The teat, in fact, is flat towards the bottom. In the upper part, the one that comes into contact with the palate of the puppy, the teat of the pacifier takes on a rounded shape.
What about the drop-shaped teat ? In this case, the shape is symmetrical and elongated.
When talking about the characteristics of the pacifier , it is necessary to mention, in addition to the existence of the teat, that of the shield .
This is the external part , made of plastic material, which has the purpose of preventing the newborn from swallowing the pacifier.
Not to be overlooked is the existence of pacifiers with a ring on the shield , a detail that can make it easier to extract or connect the pacifier to the chain.
