Why does a newborn baby lose weight?

Anyone who is already a mother knows it well: when a baby is born, you are literally inundated with questions.

Raise your hand if, after giving birth, you were asked by relatives and friends “How much do you weigh?”.

This is a curiosity that makes little sense because it is the physiological decline of the newborn that occurs.

The physiological decline of the newborn is due to several factors. Here are which ones:

  • Loss of fluids through feces, urine, respiratory processes;

  • calorie expenditure for activities such as crying and for the physical effort required for sucking;

  • stomach that is too small - let's not forget that, during intrauterine life, this organ is actually of no use since nutrients arrive through the umbilical cord - to accommodate a quantity of milk capable of compensating for the fluids lost and the calories burned.

Due to the small size of the stomach, in the first few days of life the baby is nourished by the few drops of colostrum that the mother's breast produces.
